Thank You!

event volunteers

Thank you to everyone who participated with the Spring Volunteer Appreciation Brunch!  It was wonderful to see you!

Cooking Matters Volunteers and Staff met at Gleaners Community Food Bank on May 6th for some good eats and gardening! Many chose indoor gardening and planting, but despite the chilly weather, a very committed group went out in the sun to weed and prepare our Food Zoo Garden.

PICT0001

Brunch consisted of delicious salads, wraps and baked goods made by both Cooking Matters Volunteers and Staff. Among the many tasty treats was the Cooking Matters Moroccan Carrot Salad, slightly adapted!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils
  • 6 medium carrots
  • 1/2 small onion
  • 1 large lemon
  • 3 Tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup dark or golden raisins

Instructions

1. Cook lentils according to package.

2. Rinse and peel carrots and onion.

3. Shred carrots with a grater. Dice onion.

4. Rinse lemon and cut in half. In a small bowl, squeeze juice. Discard seeds.

5. In a medium bowl, combine lentils, carrots and onions.

6. In a second small bowl, combine oil, curry powder, salt, pepper, and 2 Tablespoons of the lemon juice. Mix well. Let marinate 5 minutes.

7. Pour liquid mixture over lentils, carrots and onions. Stir in raisins. Mix well.

My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery

MNMG Logo

MNMG Logo

Gleaners Community Food Bank continues to work on filling the gaps in food security for those in Metro Detroit. One way food is distributed to individuals who are lacking healthy, nutritious meals is bringing the food to them. Gleaners does this by sending the My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery truck!

My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery (MNMG) brings a "grocery store" to five different locations near or within Detroit. These five locations include:

  • Kramer Homes Cooperative
8830 E. 10 Mile Rd., Center Line, MI
    Wednesday, 5:00 – 6:30pm

  • Lexington Village Apartments
    1310 Pallister Ave., Detroit, MI
    Wednesdays, 10 -11am

  • Piquette Square
    6221 Brush Street, Detroit, MI
    Mondays, 10am – 12pm

  • Siersma Elementary School
    3100 Donne Ave., Warren, MI
    Mondays, 3:30 - 4:30pm

  • Woodbridge Senior Village
3701 John C Lodge Fwy., Detroit, MI
    Wednesdays, 1-3pm

MNMG provides a variety of groceries such as produce, non-perishables, milk, eggs, and other refrigerated items.  There are several ways for consumers to save money with the loyalty program called My Mobile Money, where every dollar spent on milk, eggs, or produce is put toward those same items the following week.

My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery allows people living in food deserts or food swamps to have access to healthy, affordable food.  Just another way Gleaners is helping those in our community!

Postal Parade!

         postal truck

On Thursday May 11th Gleaners Community Food Bank hosted a parade of mail trucks to celebrate the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The Food Drive took place on Saturday, May 13th.  Postal customers were encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable food items next to their mail box for their local letter carrier to deliver to Gleaners.

Since the drive began in 1994, more than 1.5 billion pounds of food has been collected through the Stamp Out Hunger campaign. This year, we collected over 1.1 million pounds, surpassing our goal! Thank you, Metro Detroit!!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Carolyn Archer

Carolyn Archer a

Carolyn Archer

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a Registered Dietitian. I was born in Canada and have lived in Michigan for the past 10 years. I have had an interest in Nutrition for as long as I can remember. My parents discovered that my sister and I had an allergy to dairy when we were very young. I have memories of always having to read the ingredients on the items at the grocery store. This sparked my interest in food and its effects on health. I have a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and have worked in research and public health for many years. Five years ago I decided to pursue a career as a Registered Dietitian. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made!

What led you to the Cooking Matters program?

I found out about the Cooking Matters Program through another dietitian and began volunteering around the same time I decided to pursue my career as a dietitian. I was excited to volunteer with such a positive hands-on program that empowers people to make healthy nutritious meals.

What is your favorite part of volunteering with the Cooking Matters Program?

I enjoy the fact that it is a fun learning experience for everyone. I enjoy sharing my knowledge about food and always come away having learned something new as well. I also enjoy seeing how much everyone has learned by the end of the 6 week program.

What ingredients will we always find in your kitchen?

Lentils. Lentils are delicious and packed with protein and fiber. They can be used to make stews, rice dishes, and even tacos!

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending a tremendous amount of time with my family. I visit my family frequently and enjoy trying out new foods and recipes with them.

Do you have a recipe you’d like to share?

I recently purchased a nut milk bag and made chocolate almond milk with my nephew who also has a dairy allergy. We had so much fun making it together!

Recipe

1 cup raw almonds (soak in filtered water overnight and drain)

4 cups of filtered water

5-6 dates

½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon of salt

Your favorite cocoa powder or chocolate to taste!

Add all ingredients to blender. Blend on high until smooth. Taste and adjust ingredients as needed.

Place nut milk bag over bowl. Pour blended nut milk into bag. Twist and squeeze bag until pulp is dry.

Pour Chocolate Almond Milk into container, cover and refrigerate. Enjoy!

 Employment Opportunity:  MNMG Nutrition Coordinator!

Marisa Hrbal, Nutrition Coordinator.

My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery (MNMG)

In some areas of Metro Detroit, healthy, affordable food is not easily available. To increase our hungry neighbors' access to food in these food deserts and food swamps, Gleaners Community Food Bank offers mobile grocery stores. My Neighborhood Mobile Grocery (MNMG) brings a variety of perishable and non-perishable items to 5 locations in Metro Detroit.

As a supplement to the healthy, affordable food items offered through MNMG, Gleaners also offers Nutrition Education. This program encourages mobile pantry customers to try healthy foods and recipes, and to stretch food resources in the most nutritious way possible.

Gleaners Community Food Bank is currently recruiting for a MNMG Nutrition Coordinator to offer Nutrition Education through mobile groceries. This position is part time (20 hours per week) and will report to Kat Benford.

The complete job descriptions for this position can be found here

Interested candidates are to email Sheryl Stoddard at sstoddard@gcfb.org.

Be on the lookout for new site opportunities!
